"David Cook sings from the heart, and is not afraid to be vulnerable. His crisp voice is pure soul." - Digital Journal
In 2008, David Cook became the first rocker to win "American Idol," with his energetic versions of such classics as Free's "Alright Now," Collective Soul's "The World I Know," and Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Since his win, the acclaimed singer-songwriter has become a Platinum recording artist in his own right, starred in Kinky Boots on Broadway and toured extensively throughout the world.
Cook's impassioned mainstream-rock vocals that so impressed "American Idol" judges, were developed over ten years in the trenches of the midwest music scene, with his first album, Analog Heart, released in 2006. Winning 'Idol' in 2008 catapulted the artist's career; Cook debuted 11 songs in the Hot 100; his 2009 self-titled LP went Platinum; and This Loud Morning (2011) climbed to Billboard's Top 10. "What ['Idol' has] done for me and countless others, I don't think that can be quantified," Cook told Billboard shortly after releasing his 2015 critically-acclaimed brooding rock album Digital Vein.
In 2018, Cook made an unexpected turn from the power ballads and arena rockers he favored on his previous recordings. Marking a fresh start for the artist, the EP Chromance features a distinctly darker lyrical tone and edgier musical feel. Cook attributes these qualities in large part to being inspired by the industrial-rock kings Nine Inch Nails and English trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack, having always admired how they pushed the envelope and brought pop elements into rock music.
An avid collaborator, Cook worked with songwriters such as Nathan Chapman, Steve Rusch, Tim Bruns and Ryan Star, to not necessarily write his own album, but "to write the best song in the room." The outcome is outstanding. From the bluesy "Gimme Heartbreak" to the plaintive "Ghost Magnetic," each track of Chromance represents a different shade of love. Refreshing and distinct, each with its own identity, these songs speak to the universal experience and will melt your heart. Digital Journal gives "this new collection of songs an A rating."
Always drawn to new creative endeavors, Cook made his Broadway debut in Kinky Boots in the lead role of Charlie Price in 2018, and returned to the role again later in the year. Another passion of Cook's is his work with ABC2, a Washington DC-based nonprofit that drives cutting edge research and treatments for brain cancer and brain tumors, for which he has raised over one million dollars in support.
