"a world conquering British documentary... How To Start A Revolution is the antithesis of a blockbuster, but its implications are explosive." - Louise Gray, The Daily Telegraph
" [Four Stars!] Hard to resist... A documentary that has, in the light of the Arab Spring, never been more relevant and offers a humanistic and optimistic flipside to the all-too frequent films detailing nothing but seemingly unending, bloody conflict." - Amber Wilkinson, Eye For Film

7th Art Releasing presents How To Start A Revolution, a rousing portrait of the most important man you've never heard of in the age of Occupy Wall Street. Winner of the Best Documentary at Raindance and Boston, director Ruaridh Arrow's smart and potent doc makes its NYC theatrical premiere with a week-long run, February 24 - March 1.
Half a world away from Cairo's Tahrir Square, 83-year-old American intellectual Gene Sharp shuffles around his cluttered terrace house in a working-class Boston neighborhood. He grows orchids, has yet to master the Internet, and hardly seems dangerous. Yet his ideas have been the catalyst for the end of oppressive regimes.
HOW To Start A Revolution reveals the remarkable story of modern activism, and the power of people to change their world, through the legacy of this unassuming, soft-spoken man. Professor Sharp has written the blueprint for revolutionary leaders around the globe, "From Dictatorship to Democracy," a handbook of 198 strategic 'weapons' to topple dictators. The film explores how organizers of an uprising in one country train and inspire participants in the next, and how social media now threatens tyrants in ways that were unimaginable a decade ago. We also meet progressive trailblazers from Serbia, Ukraine, Egypt and Syria, who discuss how they struggled to seize democratic power.
87 minutes. In English. Presented in Blu-ray. Unrated. A 7th Art release.
