Rarely on public view, the approximately 20 works in Women Sculptors of the National Academy will reflect the range of developments that occurred in American sculpture between the 1890s and the late 20th century while celebrating the contributions of women artists to the medium. The works range in subject from classical allegory in Evelyn Beatrice Longman’s Victory (1903;1908) to Nancy Grossman’s politically charged Gunhead (c. 1991). Other artists whose works will be exhibited include Louise Bourgeois, Margaret Cresson, Cleo Hartwig, Jennie Ruth Nickerson, Marion Roller, Katherine Lane Weems and Bessie Potter Vonnoh (1872-1955), who became the first women sculptor admitted to the Academy, in 1906.
