Westbeth Artists Housing is the largest artists' community in the world and provides affordable housing for artists and their families. Formerly the Bell Telephone Lab, the buildng was renovated in 1970 by Richard Meier with funding from the JM Kaplan Fund. Westbeth is home to poets, playwrights, actors, directors, dancers, choreographers, printmakers, filmmakers, painters, writers, sculptors et al. At the Westbeth Art Gallery and the Westbeth Community Room, art exhibitions, performances, dance and music festivals take place throughout the year. Westbeth is also home to the New School, the Beth Simchat Synagogue, Merce Cunningham Dance, the Brecht Forum, and other cultural organizations who also sponsor events here.
