The Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union (LESPFCU) is a member-owned, not for profit financial institution. The credit union was founded by a coalition of community activists in 1986 after the last bank located between 14th and Delancey Street closed, leaving the low-income community with no access to basic financial services.
The credit union is dedicated to meeting the financial services and credit needs of local residents, businesses and community organizations based on a “common bond” among people who live, work, or associate together on the Lower East Side or in Central Harlem, low income residents of the 5 boroughs through the People’s Center for Economic Independence (PCEI), staff and volunteers and Housing Development Fund Corporations (HDFC) residents and buildings.
In its twenty-fifth year of history, the credit union has reinvested $53 million into the Lower East Side in the form of personal, business and housing loans to our membership.
